As John Butt writes in the CD notes, these remarkable sonatas mix virtually every conceivable genre, form, style, medium, and gesture of the late German Baroque. In addition to the three sonatas for viola da gamba and harpsichord, the CD includes Malcolm Proud’s exquisite performance of the Prelude and Fugue in A minor BWV 894, a piece from which Bach derived much of the material for the Triple Concerto for violin, flute, and harpsichord, BWV 1044.
